What is EIA-SUSY?

EIA-SUSY is an Environmental Impact Assessment - Support System for Syria. The system provides support to all actors involved in EIA procedures with comprehensive information in the main fields of Environmental Impact Assement according to the Executive Procedures in the Syrian Arab Republic. Special focus is given to the authorities which are responsible for all steps within the EIA procedure and the developers who are responsible for the information about the expected environmental impacts, layed down in an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).

Beside this, the system should also be helpful to all other actors like EIA Licensed Experts, involved Stakeholders or the Public which might be affected by the projects impacts.

Why to become member of Syrian Network of EIA Experts?

By decision of the Syrian Order of Engineers and Architects (OSEA), on 16th of February 2010, the Syrian EIA Network of EIA Experts (SYNEIA) was founded. From now on, interested individual persons can apply for becoming members. The network is a new organisation especially for those actors who are involved in EIA procedures like members of licensing authorities or privarte engineers / companies, holding an EIA license according to the Article 2 of EIA Executive Procedure. Additionally, any other authority, company, investor, non governemental organisation or private person can apply for membership. Members have free acces to much more information.

What can be my contribution?

If the professional users of EIA-SUSY will participate in the system in regular submission of EIA relevant information, EIA-SUSY can grow and develope to a very efficient support system. After a time, it will present the 'good practice of EIA and EIS", so a minimum standard will be guaranteed.The first step to support the system is to become member of the EIA Expert Network (see article above).

The developer is responsible for the preparation of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). It is one of the key components within the whole EIA procedure. Content, extent and methods to be applied are defined by the authority during the scoping step. The EIS is the central source of the environmental information.
